Nikolai Nikolaevich Alekseyev (1871¿1905) was a Russian writer, descended from an impoverished noble family in the St. Petersburg province, the son of a staff captain. He graduated from the Vvedenskaya Gymnasium and studied at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University. He lived in poverty his entire life, supporting himself through literature and private tutoring. His work is distinguished by a profound interest in turning points in Russian history, attention to the inner world of man, and sympathy for the fates of ordinary people. Among his works: "The Tatar Scion" (1896), "Amidst Troubles" (1897), "Roses and Thorns" (1898), "The False Tsarevich" (1899), "The Overseas Native" (1900), "In the People's Storm" (1902), "The Fedoseevsky Bishop" (1903), and "The Fiery Heretic" (1905). Tormented by poverty and despair, the writer committed suicide in 1905. This volume includes the historical novels "Roses and Thorns" and "The False Tsarevich," united by a common plot and characters, creating a unified narrative about Russia on the eve of and during the height of the Time of Troubles. The first part, "Roses and Thorns" (1898), transports the reader to the reign of Boris Godunov. Alekseev recreates an atmosphere of anxiety, popular unrest, and political intrigue, depicting the confrontation between supporters of the strengthening of tsarist power and the old boyar families. Dramas of love, betrayal, and ambition unfold against the backdrop of historical events. The author combines documentary precision with intense psychological insight and melodramatic expressiveness. The second part, "The False Tsarevich" (1899), reveals one of the most enigmatic episodes in Russian history. After Godunov's death, an impostor appears, claiming to be the miraculous survivor of Tsarevich Dmitry. Alekseyev chronicles not only the events but also the spiritual catastrophe of the era, when faith and doubt, fanaticism and despair intertwine in the souls of the people. The rise and fall of the impostor become a symbol of the entire Time of Troubles¿a time when the people, having lost faith in the authorities, seek salvation in myth and miracle. These two novels form a sweeping epic canvas about the fate of Russia in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Alekseyev combines historical accuracy with emotional power and moral intensity, transforming the chronicle of events into a vivid exploration of the human soul and national tragedy.
